| Symposium 26: The myth of the sterile worker: A reconsideration of worker reproductive options in social Hymenoptera without morphological castes | |||
| There exists an important taxonomic divide in the study of worker reproductive options. Among primitively social insects, especially sweat bees, workers pursue a variety of reproductive options that include sterile altruism, but also include queen replacement, queen supersedure, oviposition of eggs in queen-right nests, and maternity of both diploid and haploid offpsring. However, these facts are not widely appreciated in the wider social insect world. Indeed, some recent publications regard worker reproduction and worker selfishness in some taxa as quite novel. This symposium will address the issue of worker reproductive behaviour and reproductive options in a variety of taxa, including not only the primitively eusocial Hymenoptera, but also social Hymenoptera with morphological castes. | |||
